Mark 6: Walking on the Lake in Theme

Mark chapters 4 and 5 present Jesus in light of the miraculous. Jesus has power over creation, evil, and life. These truths are directly connected with the character of God and his power. In Mk 6:31-44 we learn about another miraculous event, the feeding of the 5,000 and then in 6:45-52 we learn about Jesus walking on water. Jesus has been presented as having the power of God; He uses this power to feed the 5,000 and walk on water.

While the miraculous is included in these accounts it is not the focus of the accounts. Jesus is again exhibiting the character of God. Jesus possesses God's greatness. What does the feeding of the 5,000 demonstrate about Jesus? What then does the walking on water account demonstrate about Jesus? How are the two connected?

  1. Jesus showed compassion in both of these acconts. He saw that the 5.000 were hungry, and he saw that the disciples were afraid.

  2. Yes, Jesus responds with compassion toward his disciples in this account. This passage goes one step further and shows an aspect of God's work with his people that comes from that compassion. His disciples are in trouble and what does Jesus do for them, what does that say about God?
